In the United States, mosquitoes and ticks can spread viruses like West Nile, Powassan, eastern equine encephalitis, and more. Unfortunately, many of these conditions have no prevention or treatments in the United States and infection can occur within 15 minutes of exposure.
For the MS population, patients that are treated with B-cell therapies such as ocrelizumab, ofatumumab, rituximab, and related agents have increased risk of severe arboviral neuroinvasive diseases. With increased incidences in late summer and fall, tick and mosquito exposures remain significant in Minnesota.
Why Patients on B-cell Therapies Should be Aware of Arboviral Infections
B-cell therapies such as Ocrevus, Briumvi and Kesimpta deplete B-cells and can potentially cause immunosuppression and/or modulate B-cell function, resulting in a decreased ability to develop new antibodies to fight off new infections, especially those that target the brain, nervous system and spinal cord.
Practical Mosquito and Tick Bite Prevention Strategies
- Protect your body by using insect repellent, wearing long, loose-fitting pants and shirts. Avoid areas that have increased tick populations such as wooded, bushy or grassy areas.
- Protect your clothing and gear by using 0.5% permethrin.
- Protect your home and yard by removing any standing water, using screens on windows and doors, and remove leaf litter and clear tall grasses.
- Check for ticks on your clothing, body and pets. If a tick is found, remove it immediately. Seek care if you believe you have been bitten.
