Did you know that 60-80% of Multiple Sclerosis patients experience worsening neurological symptoms with heat exposure? This is called the Uhthoff’s phenomenon.

In the 19th century, patients who were suspected of having MS were placed in hot baths to see if their neurological symptoms worsened. So, heat and MS are not new concepts; it has been around for centuries.

Why Does the Uhthoff’s Phenomenon Happen?

In MS, nerve cells are damaged, causing leakage of important electrolytes, resulting in the transmission of signals becoming ineffective or lost. In addition, when the core body temperature rises, this again slows down the already inefficient transmission of the signal, resulting in temporary, reversible neurological symptoms.

What Can You Do About It?

We can’t tell you to avoid heat, especially in the summer. However, there are things that you can do to help keep your body cool.

  1. Cooling vest
  2. Hydration is key! Ensure you are drinking enough cold water, especially while outdoors. The rule of thumb is to drink 68 oz per day.
  3. Head and neck cooling wraps.
  4. Wear light, loose, comfortable, and breathable clothes
  5. Avoid outdoor activity during peak hours 1-4 pm
  6. Apply ice packs to areas such as under your arms, neck, and core.
  7. Seek air conditioning when able.
